The new long-term-support release of Oracle Database is 23c. Besides more than 300 new features this release also contains all the new features that were introduced in Oracle Database 21c. In the coming blog series Patrick Barel will show you some of the new features or Oracle Database 23c. Let's start with the introduction.

21c was labelled as an innovation release, so it hasn’t been widely adopted. Oracle themselves tell you to skip the innovation releases in a production environment because of their limited support period, unless there is a feature that you have been waiting for or really cannot live without. It is a good idea though, to install these innovation releases in a development environment, to learn about and play around with the new features.

At the time of writing, Oracle Database 23c is not yet Generally Available, but to give you the opportunity to learn about all the new features and really play with them, Oracle provides us with ‘Oracle Database 23c Free - Developer Edition’. Maybe you are familiar with the XE editions of Oracle Database. The Free edition is pretty much the same. It is a fully functional version of Oracle Database but with limited CPU usage (2 CPUs), limited memory usage (2Gb Ram) and limited storage (12 Gb). Other than that, it is (almost) a full Oracle Database EE version.

This developer edition is not the final version of Oracle Database 23c Free. This is sort of a public beta release. It has all the features that are available in the beta version of Oracle Database 23c. That means you might encounter bugs and/or stuff that doesn’t work completely correct yet. This developer edition is mainly released to give you the opportunity to get acquainted with the new features and be ready for this version when Oracle Database 23c is GA and therefor available for your production environment.

In the coming series, I will show you some of the new features or Oracle Database 23c. I hope you have the chance to install the Developer Edition, so you can try everything out yourself. The subjects are:
